An intruder broke into the home of an 87-year-old woman and attacked her. Thankfully, the woman’s neighbor saw the crime unfolding and went over to help. Although 67-year-old Lorenza Marrujo might not have looked like much of a threat to the beefy intruder, the criminal did not know that Marrujo had thirty-years of jujitsu practice under her belt. Although it had been more than a decade since her last official training session in the martial art, she was able to subdue the intruder.
When the incident was reported by the San Bernardino Sun, they said that Marrujo prefers to be known as the “Lady Ninja” as she often trained and worked out to Eye of the Tiger.
“I needed (the song) in case I had a close encounter of the bad kind,” Marrujo said. “I prefer to be called Lady Ninja.”
During her interview with the publication, she confirmed that she could have overpowered the intruder if she had been prepared for it. But who is prepared for a break-in at all times?
“I’m getting rusty in places,” she said. “I would have done more damage to him.”
The assailant was Donald Robert Prestwood, 59. He broke into the 87-year-old’s home and attacked the woman on September 28, 2020. Thankfully, Marrujo earned a black belt during her years of martial arts training and was more than willing to put her years of training into practice to stop the bad guy.
When Prestwood arrived at 8 PM, Marrujo was home in her apartment on the third floor. He sounded like he was drunk or under the influence of drugs and asked for her girlfriend. Prestwood, who was not a stranger, lived in the apartment complex and did handyman work for those in need.
However, Prestwood was not himself – and he was violent. He grabbed at Marrujo when she confronted him.
“I said, ‘Back off or I will have to hurt you,’” she said.
And she would. She faced many challenges in life, including on-and-off-again homelessness for thirty years. Her martial arts training often became very useful when people tried to hurt her.
Prestwood left Marrujo’s apartment but entered the first-floor apartment of an elderly neighbor, Elizabeth McCray. She is the supposed girlfriend’s mother. When Marrujo heard the woman screaming, she ran to help. She found her beneath Prestwood against the floor.
“I had to bend his fingers back … to get him off her. He was screaming because that’s one of my techniques, the bent fingers. Then I went ‘boom’ with my elbow twice in his sternum,” Marrujo said.
She then held Prestwood down by kneeling one leg on his chest and the other against his throat.
After it was done, Prestwood was arrested by police.
“Jesus was here and gave her power,” McCray said. “I wouldn’t think a little lady would have the power to do this.”
Marrujo encourages others to remain out of fights like this because you never know when a suspect is armed.
