The prime suspect in the latest Colorado murder was the last person the police expected. An eleven-year-old boy now waits in jail on charges of murdering a 62-year-old woman at a remote cabin in the woods. The boy allegedly shot the senior citizen to death. Due to the boy’s youth, his name has not been published, but he has been charged with second-degree murder because of the violent end to Karmen Keefauver’s life in Montrose County.

A report of the shooting was made to police officers and paramedics. They arrived at the remote cabin on December 19, 2020, and rushed the 62-year-old woman to the Montrose Memorial Hospital. However, doctors were not able to keep the woman from meeting her maker, and she was pronounced dead a little while after arriving at the health care facility.

Police and other first responders arrived at the scene shortly after receiving the report of the shooting. The incident occurred along the 16000-block of Shavano Valley Road at about 9 am on the cold December Saturday.

A quick investigation revealed that the person responsible for shooting Keefauver was an eleven-year-old boy. He was arrested and brought into Grand Mesa Youth Services, where he remains in custody.

When addressing the incident, the sheriff’s office shared their condolences to the victim’s family. Patrol Lieutenant Cox with the Montrose County Sheriff’s Office said, according to a report by NBC 11 News, “Over the course of our investigation, it was determined that an 11-year-old juvenile was suspected in the shooting death of Keefauver.”

The officer added, “There’s no threat to public safety at this point. We don’t have any other suspects. Tragic incidents like these affect us all, especially the Keefauver family, and our deepest condolences go out to the family.”

Murders are not common in Montrose County, Colorado. The last homicide occurred three years ago in the remote area where Keefauver was killed.

Details about the connection or relationship between the victim and her young suspected killer have not been published. Because the child is a minor, those details will likely remain unshared unless the boy gets tried in court as an adult.

Lieutenant Cox added, “Tragic incidents like these affect us all, especially the Keefauver family, and our deepest condolences go out to the family.”

Readers of Daily Mail were appalled and horrified by the details of the murder in Colorado.

One reader wrote, “Let’s face it- but for the gun being in the house – this would not have happened. 220 accidental shootings of children this year in the USA. Death by gunshot was the second-highest cause of death in the United States in 2016 among children and adolescents ages 1 to 19.”

“An 11-year-old child will only kill #1 because they are crazy or #2 because someone is doing horrible things to them.”

“Not uncommon in CO. I’ve lived here my whole life & this would not be the first time I’ve known it to happen. Some places in CO… winter is cold & lasts a long time. RIP for the woman.”
