When a FedEx driver from Texas found an 89-year-old man fallen to the ground, he refused to help him. Now the “cruel” FedEx driver has been exposed for failing to assist the old man in his moment of need after the Ring video footage of the incident was posted online. In the clip, the FedEx driver looks at the man, who is begging for help, and tells him, “I can’t do that, poppa,” without citing any official FedEx policy or anything – just leaving the man to writhe in pain on the ground as he waited for someone with a big enough heart to help him.
Because the 89-year-old man had collapsed on his porch at his home in Freeport near Galveston, he needed help from someone. In the doorbell footage, the old man is not visible except for the tips of his hands and legs. He had slipped and fallen while trying to enter his home and was trapped on his back with no way to power himself back up to his feet.
Not long after, the old man fell to the ground – just about fifteen minutes after the collapse – a FedEx truck pulled up to the driveway. The elderly man must have thought this was a godsend because help was arriving. The man exited the truck with a package that was being delivered to the home.
As the driver approached, the old man called out to the employee of the delivery company and asked for some support.
“A little help here, please,” the man asked politely. “Give me a hand. I can’t get up.”
However, the FedEx driver proved not to have a kind heart when he simply tossed the man’s package onto the ground and left without offering a moment of assistance.
The FedEx driver did not even drop the package off at the man’s porch. He left the package a few feet away – probably due to COVID-19 fears – and fled back to his company truck.
Over his shoulder, the busy employee called out, “I can’t do that poppa. I’m sorry.”
The old man accepted the FedEx employee’s response with a sense of resignation.
When the delivery worker drives away in the company truck, the old man is still on the ground. This is when the uploaded video ends. However, about ten minutes later, the old man’s daughter happens to arrive.
The man’s daughter, Maria Kouches, has come forward to expose the cruelty of the FedEx employee.
“He didn’t at least ring the doorbell or call 911!” Kouches wrote in a Facebook posting. “Thank God he’s okay, but what if he hadn’t been?”
Kouches said that her father has dementia and trouble with his legs. He needed the man’s help, but the employee denied him.
“We try to keep an eye on him, but he does still move around with his walker,” Kouches said. “It seems he was maybe trying to go back inside and his leg gave out. He gets confused and easily upset with new things.”
FedEx released a statement after the video was uploaded.
“We extend our thoughts and concerns for the wellbeing of the person depicted in this video. The safety of our team members and customers in the communities that we serve is our highest priority. We are reviewing the circumstances behind this incident and will take the appropriate action.”
