Two Texas teenage girls have been arrested after they stole jewelry off a corpse and filmed the incident for their Snapchat fans. The 16 and 17-year-old girls have since been charged with stealing items from a dead person found abandoned in a drainage ditch in Bexar County, Texas. In the teens’ Snapchat video, they showed themselves stealing items from the dead man as one of the teens complemented their own fashion style despite the dead man right in front of them.

The offenders are 17-year-old Bethany Martin and her 16-year-old friend, who has not been named. The man that they found dead in the ditch on Monday morning was a 25-year-old man. The younger teen told Martin that she really liked the pendant that the dead man had around his throat, so the 17-year-old decided to steal it off the man’s body.

After ripping the jewelry from the dead man’s throat, Martin took apart the pendant and gave the medallion to her friend while tossing the unwanted chain in the grass. After this, the girls called another friend, who arrived on the scene and did the responsible thing of calling 911 because there was a dead man in a Texas rain ditch.

When police arrived at the scene, they heard from the girls about what happened. The teens explained that they were in the middle of a walk to a nearby gas station when they happened to find the dead man in the drainage ditch.

Nevertheless, the girls first used the man’s corpse as a prop to get more likes and followers on Snapchat. In one video, they showed themselves hanging around the dead man and a second video showed Martin stealing the pendant from the dead man’s neck.

Meanwhile, the sixteen-year-old girl has not been named because of her age. However, she admitted to the police that she wanted the dead man’s necklace for herself and that she quickly put it on the chain she was already wearing. When police asked her why she did it, she said that the dead man’s necklace “matched her fashion style.”

The teen did not get to keep the dead man’s pendant. She was asked to hand it over to police when they were confronted at the scene where the dead man was found in the drainage ditch. The police then gave the necklace to the man’s next of kin as is the appropriate process.

On Tuesday, the day after the incident, Martin was arrested on a charge of theft to a human corpse or gave. Bexar County officials confirmed that they arrested Martin and threw her in jail, although she was not held for long because she managed to post the $2,000 bond and get out pending her trial.

The sixteen-year-old suspect was also charged with the theft of a human corpse.

As for the dead man, Texas homicide detectives ruled out foul play. Instead, they suspect that the man passed away from suicide.
